A
PERSON CANNOT CONTROL HIS INCOME, BUT CAN CONTROL HIS EXPENDITURE
Hazrat
Mufti Muhamad Shafi Rehmatullah Elaih used to say that it is not always in a
person’s control to increase his income, but it is always in a person’s control
to reduce his expenses. If one is being bothered by the mismatch between his
income and expenditure, then he should reduce his expenditure to bring it
within his means, and be content with what he has. Then all his financial
worries would subside. The problem starts when a person pre-decides in his mind
that he must have a certain lifestyle, if even he doesn’t have enough income to
sustain that lifestyle. Then when his income isn’t enough to support his
lifestyle, he starts doing things like taking loans and living beyond his means
which make his financial problems worse. If a person is able to make his
lifestyle simpler, and decide that I will adopt a lifestyle to suit my income,
and not the other way round, and be content that if I earn less I will spend
less, and if I earn more I will spend more, then he will have a very happy and
fulfilled life. This is the essence of contentment (قناعت).
