MATERIAL WEALTH CAN BE A CURSE TOO
In Surah Taubah (Repentance) Allah Ta’alah says,
“So, their wealth and their children should not attract you.
In fact, Allah intends to punish them with these in this lowly life and that
their souls should depart while they are disbelievers.” [9:55]
It means that Allah
Ta’alah punishes some people who fall in love with their material possessions,
through the same material possessions. Their wealth becomes a source of
suffering, rather than a source of happiness and comfort for them. The only way
to escape that punishment and curse is not to covet what others have, but to be
satisfied and happy with what we have, and thank Allah Ta’alah for it. There is
no restriction on fulfilling one’s basic and just needs through Halal
(permissible) means, but earning more and more wealth should not become an
all-consuming pursuit and passion for us, to the exclusion of carrying out what
other duties Allah Ta’alah has bestowed upon us in this world.
