SHOW-OFF IS NOT ALLOWED
The fourth reason a person may spend money on a house is
showing it off and trying to impress other people, meaning that the house was
providing shelter, it was comfortable, it looked good to its owner, but now the
person is spending money on it with an intention that those who see it will be
impressed with his wealth, and will think that he must be somebody great, then
spending money with that intention will be Hara’am (impermissible).
The same principle can be applied to most other
situations. It is permissible to spend within one’s means to fulfil basic
needs, to obtain comfort, to make one’s heart happy, but it is Hara’am to spend
with the intention of showing off to other people.
