LIVING CONDITIONS OF ASHAB-E-SUFFAH
Hazrat Abu Hurairah Razi Allah Anhu was one of these Ashab-e-Suffah. He is
describing the living conditions of the Ashab-e-Suffah that he saw that seventy
of them did not have two pieces of clothes to cover their entire body. Some
only had a sheet which they tied around their neck and tried to cover their
entire body with it. Others only had pajamas to cover their lower body and
nothing to cover their upper body. These people lived there in these conditions
to learn the knowledge of Deen from the Holy Prophet ﷺ. Were these people not capable
of earning great wealth? Allah Ta’alah had given them so much knowledge, so
much wisdom, so much ability, that they could earn whatever wealth they wanted
to, but they chose to live in these conditions for the sake of gathering
religious knowledge because material wealth was not a priority to them. Whatever
they got to sustain their life was enough for them.
