SURAH AN-NISA (WOMEN): 8-10

TRANSLATION:

[4:8]
If the relatives (who are not heirs) and the orphans and the needy are present at the time of distribution, give them some of it, and speak to them in fair words. {8}

[4:9]
Those people should be fearful (in their behavior towards orphans) who, if they leave behind some helpless children, would remain anxious for them {9}. So, they should fear Allah and say what is right.

[4:10]
Surely, those who unjustly devour the property of the orphans do nothing but devour fire into their bellies, and soon they shall enter a blazing Hell.

INTERPRETATION:

{8} At the time of an inheritance being distributed, sometimes there are people present who do not have a claim to the inheritance under the rules of Shariah. The Holy Quran is telling us that it is good practice to give them something from the inheritance. However, it must be remembered that doing so is Mustahabb (recommended) but not Wajib (compulsory). The second point to remember is that any such disbursement should come out of the share of an adult inheritor who is gladly willing to do so. It is not permissible to give anything to anyone from the inheritance share of a minor (a pre-pubertal child).

{9} Meaning that just like you worry about your own children as to what would happen to them after your death, worry in the same way about other people’s children and refrain from misappropriating inheritance of orphans.
