NOT
DISCLOSING OTHER PEOPLE’S MISTAKES
In the
third sentence, the Holy Prophet ﷺ
said, “On the Day of Qiyamah (Doomsday) Allah Ta’alah will hide the mistakes of
the Muslim, who hid the mistakes of other people.”
We often
indulge in this practice that if we come to know that a person has committed
some mistake or a wrong, we start publicising it to the whole world. Rather, we
should cover other people’s mistakes and should not tell other people about
them. This should be done when no one else is going to be harmed by his
actions. However, when someone’s actions are likely to harm someone else, for
example a person is planning to kill someone or steal their property, in those
situations we have an obligation to inform the intended victim. At that time,
it is not permissible to cover up that planning. However, if his actions are
not likely to harm someone else, then we are under an obligation not to tell
others about people’s mistakes, and to pray for him that, “O’ Allah! My brother
has become involved in this sin. Please be merciful to him and help him abstain
from that sin.”
We
should neither look for other people’s sins and mistakes, nor broadcast them to
the whole world if we come to know about them. This is a major menace in our
societies these days. If a person comes to know about a mistake or a sin
committed by another person, then they cannot rest till they have shared it
with other people. We do not realize that publicizing other people’s mistakes
and sins without just cause (when there is a risk of harm to someone else) is a
major sin (گناہِ کبیرہ).
